Go to your local council and apply to be put on the housing list. Ask them for a list of housing associations and apply to them also. Soem housing assns publish their vacant properties on the web, so you can easily check whats available.
If the Tory government had not encouraged councils to sell off as many houses as possible, there would be room for everyone who needed a house
